I turn a corner, stunned now by faces /
on the wall—masks of deities, shamans, /
in papier-mâché, carved wood, stuffed skin. /
Black brows pull down over glaring eyes, /
red mouths stretch in snarls or gentle smiles.

alone in the house

endless cigarettes
thinking housewives
must go crazy
with the temptation
of medicine cabinets
and paring knives

Anne Durant is 17 years old and recently graduated from Loomis Chaffee, a boarding school in Connecticut. Writing has been a part of her life since she penned her autobiography in purple crayon at age six. She has participated in several readings and did a two-week study of Anne Sexton that culminated in her teaching a class of sophomore English students about Anne Sexton's work and Confessional poetry. |
